The Bengals stormed to the AFC I North title in 2005 behind a potent offense. Of their division rivals, only the Steelers could figure out how to slow Cincinnati, and one of Pittsburgh's wins came after QB Carson Palmer exited the playoff meeting with a serious knee injury. The Bengals division crown high lighted head coach Marvin Lewis' excellent work in his first three seasons. Lewis instilled a culture of winning in Cincinnati by raising expectations and running off the players who didn't fit his system.
Lewis and the Bengals' personnel department must also be praised for their excellent drafting in recent seasons. The first three drafts of Lewis' tenure yielded both impact players and quality depth. Cincinnati's 2001 and '02 draft classes have also, by and large, stood the test of time. For many years, the Bengals' scouting practices were laughable and their depth chart barren of talent, but now Cincinnati boasts one of the AFC's most enviable rosters.
But where do the Bengals go from here? Palmer's health status was in doubt at pre'sstime, and the Bengals can no longer count on trusty backup QB Jon Kitna, who signed with Detroit. Cincinnati's defense has yet to prove it can consistently hold its own vs. top competition. The defense must play the run better and the QB play must be consistent for the Bengals to contend.

Bengals NFL 2006 Draft:

Entering the draft, the needs were most pressing at tight end and defensive tackle, St. but the Bengals surprised by not taking a tight end and waiting until the fourth round to select defensive tackle Domata Peko. Cincinnati selected Johnathan Joseph, a terrific athlete but very inexperienced cornerback, in the first round. Andrew Whitworth was a four-year starter at LSD, but lacks agility and overall athletic ability to remain at left tackle. Frostee Rucker flashed pass-rushing potential at Southern Cal, but lacked consistency. A.J. Nicholson was productive for Florida State, but struggled with off-the-field conduct. Reggie McNeal is a tremendous athlete, but it remains to be seen if he has what it takes to stay at quarterback in the NFL. Ethan Kilmer did little to excite on college game days, but impressed in his athletic workout prior to the draft. Athletic Bennie Brazell will be a project at wide receiver. The inability to add a tight end drops the final grade.
