There's no doubt the Broncos made some headlines in 2005. Mike Shanahan won his first playoff game since the John Elway era ended. They signed, then later released Jerry Rice in the preseason. They drafted, then later released troubled RB Maurice Clarett. They were the butt of jokes as they brought in a quartet of former Browns defensive linemen who were labeled as journeymen or underachievers, only to see the experiment work perfectly. They nearly boasted a pair of 1,000-yard rushers and saw CB Champ Bailey take on almost a cult-like following with his Pro Bowl play.
But in the end, it wasn't enough for a fan base with enormous expectations, as their visions of a Super Bowl were dashed by the Steelers in the AFC championship game, after two years of being ousted from the postseason by the Colts in the wild-card round.
In the offseason, offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak took the head-coaching job with the Texans and Denver parted ways with RB Mike Anderson and long-time DL Trevor Pryce and traded for Packers WR Javon Walker.

Broncos NFL 2006 Draft: |
| Denver traded up and made a deal with the Rams at No. 11 overall in order to select Jay Cutler. With a team so close to the Super Bowl, &, the selection of a quarterback could have been the biggest surprise of the first round. Tony Scheffler fills a need at tight end, but must add strength to be more of a factor in the running game. Brandon Marshall has size and athletic ability and could be a boom or bust. Elvis Dumervil dominated as a senior, but lacks size and dropped until the fourth round due to unimpressive workouts. Domenik Hixon is a MAC sleeper from Akron who could surprise. Chris Kuper dominated at North Dakota and will provide depth at guard. Greg Eslinger fits extremely well into the Broncos' zone-blocking scheme and will be groomed to replace Tom Nalen. This has the look of one of the better drafts of the year. |
