Armed with a division title and an NFC championship game appearance in 2004, the Falcons appeared headed in the right direction. They had a new head coach in place and a talented roster of players entering their prime. The Falcons had legitimate Super Bowl aspirations in 2005, and a 6-2 start had Atlanta in excellent position to prove the franchise's losing ways were over. But Jim Mora's squad slumped to a 2-6 finish that kept it out of the playoffs and prevented back-to-back winning seasons
from being pieced together for the first time in the franchise's 40-year history.
Mora can win back support in 2006 by leading the Falcons' return to the play-offs. Anything less than a postseason berth, and Mora will go from being the toast of the NFL as a rookie head coach to getting toasted by his critics.

Falcons NFL 2006 Draft: |
| The Falcons dealt their first-round draft choice to the Jets for defensive end John , Abraham. With their first pick, they selected a defensive back Jimmy Williams. The former Virginia Tech standout has top-10 athletic
ability, but character and coachabiiity dropped him into the second round. Jerious Norwood was very productive for Mississippi State and will be groomed to replace Warrick Dunn. Quinn Ojinnaka shows some athletic ability, but will need time to develop. Smallish Adam Jennings excels returning kicks. D.J. Shockley was a one-year starter at Georgia who could surprise down the road. The first day was solid, but outside of Shockley, the second day did little to excite. |
