The Jets are a team in rebuilding mode following a disappointing 2005 season that began with Super Bowl hopes and ended with head coach Herm Edwards departing for his dream job in Kansas City and general manager Terry Bradway accepting a demotion to consultant status. After injuries and age exposed the Jets as a club that needed a massive overhaul, owner Woody Johnson adopted an "if you can't beat them, join them" philosophy to remake the Jets in the image of the AFC East-champion Patriots. In elevating Mike Tannenbaum to the GM job and hiring ex-Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, Johnson put his franchise's future in the hands of two 30-some-thing guys who are disciples of the Patriots'1 system and have a definite plan on how to fully implement it in New York.
As a result, this team will likely go through growing pains in 2006 as Tannenbaum and Mangini overhaul the roster and bring in the kind of players that best fit their system.

Jets NFL 2006 Draft: |
| The Jets addressed their greatest need with the selection of D'Brickashaw Ferguson. He will start immediately at left tackle, allowing Adrian Jones to return to the right side. The Jets tried
'hard to swing a deal with the Lions at No. 9 overall to be able to select QB Matt Leinart, but were unable to meet the asking price of Detroit. Late in the first round, they added center Nick Mangold, who may start and push Trey Teague to left guard. For the second straight year, the Jets jumped in front of Minnesota to select a player they knew the Vikings were targeting. Last year, it was placekicker Mike Nugent. This year, it was QB Kellen Clemens of Oregon. He will compete with Chad Pennington and Patrick Ramsey and should be ready to start in 2007. Ohio State LB Anthony Schlegel excels against the run, but lacks speed and range and was a reach in the third round. Eric Smith is an underrated strong safety with good ball skills and smarts. Highly athletic Brad Smith played quarterback at Missouri, but will likely be tried at wide receiver. Florida State's Leon Washington is the young back the team wanted to add behind aging Curtis Martin. Jason Pociask is a FB/TE 'tweener who excels as a blocker. Drew Coleman, an undersized corner, may spend his rookie season on the practice squad. Titus Adams can play any of the three line positions in the 3-4. Clemens is a wild card here, but there is little to get excited about after the first two picks. |
