Coaches never blame losses on injuries, but realists are allowed to. Considering the list of wounded — 13 players ended up on injured reserve, including QB Donovan McNabb and three other offensive starters — as well as the tragicomic fall from grace of WR Terrell Owens, the Eagles' demise was all but expected. By the end of 2005, only 11 of the 22 starters from Super Bowl XXXIX were still starting. But the team enters '06 with new hope,
buoyed by McNabb's healthy return and • more depth and playmakers on defense. Andy Reid also is T.O.-free, likely signaling a return to the days of a placid locker room and boilerplate press conferences.
If the Eagles can run the ball better and improve their pass defense, there's no question it can move closer to the 12-win average of 2001-04 than to last year's uncharacteristic 6-10 mark.

Eagles NFL 2006 Draft:

The Eagles entered the draft intending to upgrade the talent on both lines. Brodrick Bunkley was added in the first round and 3 will push Corey Simon. Once considered a — sure thing for the first half of Round One, Winston Justice slid all the way to No. 39 overall due to his questionable past. Chris Gocong is a DE/OLB 'tweener who will likely be tried first at the SAM linebacker position. Max Jean-Gilles was considered a sure second-round talent, but slipped to the early fourth. He could prove to be one of the top values in this draft. The Eagles sent OG/OT Artis Hicks to Minnesota for additional picks. Jason Avant is a possession receiver with good size. Jeremy Bloom has not played football for two years, but could help the return game. Outside linebacker Omar Gaither should fit in well with the attacking Philly defense. Southern Cal defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey comes highly recommended by Trojans Coach Pete Carroll. Defensive tackle Hollis Thomas was sent to New Orleans for additional draft choices. The two offensive linemen will impact this team for years.
