The Texans believed their expansion blueprint captured all the finest elements of past fledgling franchises. They got some immediate help in the expansion draft, picking DE Gary Walker and CB Aaron Glenn, both of whom were major contributors for several seasons. With their first-ever draft pick, they selected QB David Carr, whose character and skills seemed to give him a very good chance at stardom. Four seasons later, the Texans are still aiming for their first .500 season. Carr's development has been stunted playing behind an offensive line that has been a team weakness ever since OLT Tony Boselli couldn't overcome shoulder problems. The team's first four drafts and free-agent classes left much to be desired.
All of the team's woes came to a head last season. Offensive coordinator Chris Palmer was fired after two blowout losses yielded 25 pass completions and 13 sacks of Carr. Defensive coordinator Vie Fangio didn't have much more success, as the Texans didn't have the personnel to effectively run head coach Dom Capers' 3-4° defense.
Capers was fired after the Texans stumbled to a 2-14 record. Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, who lost out to Capers for the head-coaching job in 2001, got the job this time. Kubiak will install a Denver-influenced offense and a 4-3 defense, which appears to fit the team's personnel.
Let the Texans' first rebuilding plan commence.

Texans NFL 2006 Draft:

It took until the night before the draft for the Texans to make their intentions known to draft DE Mario Williams with the No. 1 overall selec-fe, tion. It was an understandable choice with ya Domanick Davis and Vernard Morency at halfback and the team moving towards the 4-3 defensive scheme. DeMeco Ryans is an intelligent prospect who can line up at any of the linebacker positions. Offensive tackle Eric Winston and offensive guard Charles Spencer were expected to be early second-round selections, but slid until the third and will upgrade the play of the line in front of David Carr. Tight end Owen Daniels is a former quarterback who excels in the passing game. Halfback Wall Lundy did not have the standout senior season he was hoping for at Virginia and slipped into the sixth round. David Anderson is an overachiever the coaching staff will have a hard time cutting. The Texans picked up quality prospects from top to bottom.
